Samsung Galaxy Ace review – video and camera samples

It’s the fun part of the slightly tedious phone reviewing process! Previously we’ve looked at the Galaxy Ace’s web and app abilities andhardware and user interface, so now it’s time to muck about with the camera.
This is the enjoyable interlude. Here are some photographs of cows and pigs.

The Galaxy Ace’s camera is quite well featured, with many scene modes of debatable use, a small level of manual exposure and ISO setting, plus geo-tagging GPS integration.

Photos come off the Galaxy Ace at 2560×1920 resolution, and the phone’s 5megapixel camera does a very good job indeed. Look at the lovely little baby cow. Isn’t it sweet?

It manages darker areas quite well, too, with a decent amount of contrast between light and dark. Better clean that window sill at some point this year. And there’s a flash onboard – another rarity on cheaper phones.

Video quality is a bit of a weak spot. The camera only records clips at a maximum 320×240 resolution, so the resulting footage isn’t great. Does a good job of switching between light and dark areas while filming, though.

We’ve uploaded an unedited 5MB video sample here in the MP4 format the Ace outputs. We went to the local waterfall. It was a lovely day out.

There is a macro mode on it, too. Which does a good job, if you’re the sort of person who likes taking close-up photos of static objects.

Overall, the Galaxy Ace is a very good still camera compared with its mid-range peers, but has oddly limited video recording abilities. Probably to ensure Samsung’s high-end phones are a little more desirable. That’s the conclusion we have laboured to.
