The only thing I hate about WordPress is the un-availability of free native spam fighting tool within the WordPress dashboard. The Discussion tab settings are seriously a joke and they are not able to block a single spam comment (Not for me at least). Well, finally out of frustration, I prepared a list of top 5 FREE WordPress plugins to fight spam.
# SI Captcha Anti-Spam:
This simple up-to-date plugin adds CAPTCHA anti-spam methods to your WordPress blog on the forms for comments, registration, lost password, login, or all. For WP, WPMU, and BuddyPress. This is the plugin that helped me fight spam on this blog. Phew!
# Bad Behavior:
Bad Behavior prevents spammers from ever delivering their junk, and in many cases, from ever reading your site in the first place.This keeps your site’s load down, makes your site logs cleaner, and can help prevent denial of service conditions caused by spammers.
# WP-reCAPTCHA:
This simple plugin integrates reCAPTCHA anti-spam methods with WordPress including comment, registration, and email spam protection. WPMU Compatible.
# WP-Hashcash:
WP Hashcash is an advanced antispam plugin that eradicates comment spam on WordPress blogs. It works on simple algorithm- your visitors must use obfuscated javascript to submit a proof-of-work that indicates they opened your website in a web browser, not a robot. If the javascript check fails, WP Hashcash now gives you three options; it can either put the comment into moderation (default), put the comment in the akismet queue, or delete it.
