UPDATE: A First Post report now confirms that mobile service providers like Bharti Airtel and Vodafone who've been in the news, lately for rejecting MNP requests have been brought under the TRAI scanner.
The report further suggests that both Airtel and Vodafone have received show cause notices from TRAI, in an attempt to have a better idea of what has been happening on these fronts, considering that they have been receiving a lot of complaints.
The report further states that both Airtel and Vodafone have reverted to TRAI, and that the matter is under examination, at present. Reportedly, TRAI has even been sending its officers to the offices of these telecom operators. The matter is simultaneously being taken up by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), and a decision from their end is awaited, too.
In an official statement delivered by Minister of State for Communications and IT, Milind Deora to the Rajya Sabha, reports Times of India, it has been revealed that Bharti Airtel tops the list of rejecting the most MNP requests. At 893 MNP request rejections, Airtel tops this list, followed by Vodafone (792), Idea Cellular (313), Reliance Communications (307), Tata Teleservices (149), and Loop (134).
MNP woes...
Mobile Number Portability has been a pathbreaking trend adopted by the Indian telecom industry, this year that has given the common user the power to switch to the service provider of their choice, without having to change their existing number. However, off late, instances of MNP requests being rejected by several service providers have been doing rounds, causing much inconvenience to the users. Early last month, we had reported about Vodafone having allegedly rejected several MNP requests without due explanations. That incident now just seems to have been at the tip of a deep rooted iceberg.
