LG Optimus 3D 2 image, improved specs leak

Stereoscopic 3D handsets, which could have potentially been a big game changer, as far as smartphones were concerned were introduced only last year. When these 3D handsets were launched, HTC and LG were the only two brand names that stuck out. HTC had unveiled the EVO 3D, while LG introduced the Optimus 3D p920. According to a report by Pocketnow, LG appears to be in the process of unveiling a follow up to the Optimus 3D with the Optimus 3D 2 that goes by the codename CX2. The website has received an official image of the upcoming handset from LG and an unnamed source has informed them that it will be quite slim, considering that its thickness has been reduced from under 12mm to a bit less than 10mm.

As for the specifications, the website has received word that it will feature a 1.2GHz dual-core processor TI OMAP processor as well as a 4.3-inch WVGA NOVA display. By using this NOVA display, one can expect improved brightness and contrast levels on the screen and also consume less energy, as compared with other displays.

Here is a quick look at the rumoured specifications of the LG CX2 aka 3D 2:

  • Android Gingerbread
  • 4.3-inch WVGA NOVA display with a resolution of 480 x 800
  • 1.2 GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor
  • 8GB internal memory
  • 5 Megapixel rear camera
  • 5 Megapixel front facing camera
  • DLNA-capable, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0
  • 21Mbps HSPA, NFC

The report goes on to state that according to sources there will be a significant variation between the brightness levels in 2D and 3D; with the 3D being darker. This auto-stereoscopic 3D handset will also have the ability to convert 2D content into stereoscopic 3D content. The launch of the LG 3D 2 handset can be expected to happen at the Mobile World Conference 2012 (MWC 2012) event that is going to be held at Barcelona next month.

Do you think the LG 3D2 will be able to make an impact in the smartphone segment? MWC is set to mark the time when the world will witness the first quad-core handsets, so do let us know what you think of this 3D dual-core handset’s chances of being able to rise above the 2D smartphone competition?
