Sony Ericsson confirms ICS upgrade by Q4 2012

Ever since Google released the latest build of their Android operating system in November, many manufacturers have been rushing to introduce the latest build on their pre-existing handsets. Sony Ericsson, through blog posts have always provided information regarding Ice Cream Sandwich and which devices the OS would feature on. Later on, the Marketing Manager of Sony Ericsson, Italy, posted on Facebook that Ice Cream Sandwich would probably arrive on their handsets by March 2012, but he said that it was an ambitious goal for them and a lot of work had to be put in to release it in this time period. Sony Ericsson users who are using the 2011 range of the Xperia smartphones will be interested to know that the brand’s handsets will definitely receive the update in a phased rollout by late March or early April 2012, according to a post on the brand’s blog.

The post reads that the first 2011 Xperia smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0, starting from end of March/ early April 2012 and will include the Xperia arc S, Xperia neo V and Xperia ray. Shortly after these handsets receive Android 4.0, their other smartphones such as Xperia arc, Xperia PLAY, Xperia neo, Xperia mini and mini pro, Xperia pro, Xperia active and the Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman will receive the update.

The rollout is set to take place in a phased manner over the course of several weeks and they state that all kits for a specific model would not receive the upgrade at the same time. Furthermore, Sony Ericsson has given an insight as to how the rollout would take place by saying that the aforementioned smartphone users would receive a notification on their handset instructing them to download the OS either via 3G or Wi-Fi directly to update the smartphones. Apart from this, one also has the choice to download it on a PC and install it via a PC companion.

It appears that Sony Ericsson is truly working hard to integrate their Xperia software with Ice Cream Sandwich and launch the update as soon as possible. We are eagerly waiting for the 2011 range of Sony Ericsson Xperia handsets to get a taste of Ice Cream Sandwich.
